Look For The Helpers

SERIES - Worshipping In Mr. Rogers Neighborhood: Look For The Helpers

When Fred Rogers was a boy, and saw something on the news that scared him, his mother’s counsel to bring him comfort was, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” The year 2020 will always be known as the year of COVID 19. Quarantines, stay-at-home orders, masks, and anti-bacterial soaps. While there were many who rose to the occasion by self-sacrificially serving on the front lines, helping neighbors or simply following suggested protocols, others stockpiled toilet paper. It’s normal to fear in situations like this, but could the way we manage that fear and how we respond in a crisis reflect on the trust and hope we find in our God?

This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:

  • Who have been your “helpers” that bolster your hope?
  • What do you think about the concept of during catastrophe or tragedy to look for the helpers?
  • This was counsel from Fred Rogers’ mother to him as a child and from him to the children watching his show. Is this for adults too?
  • How can adults go beyond observing the helpers?
  • What do you think about our choice in regular times and during crisis being between egoism and altruism?
  • If you reject egoism and adopt Jesus’ teaching of giving your life away, how are you strengthening your altruism?
  • What will make you ready to join Jesus in not being about being served but serving and giving your life as a ransom for many?
  • “This is how we know what love is, Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” 1John 3:16 How are you doing this or not? Is this call occasional or 24/7? When is it ok to not be a servant?
