I Like You Just The Way You Are

SERIES - Worshipping In Mr. Rogers Neighborhood: I Like You Just The Way You Are

When Fred Rogers was a boy, and saw something on the news that scared him, his mother’s counsel to bring him comfort was, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” The year 2020 will always be known as the year of COVID 19. Quarantines, stay-at-home orders, masks, and anti-bacterial soaps. While there were many who rose to the occasion by self-sacrificially serving on the front lines, helping neighbors or simply following suggested protocols, others stockpiled toilet paper. It’s normal to fear in situations like this, but could the way we manage that fear and how we respond in a crisis reflect on the trust and hope we find in our God?

This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:

  • Who might be invited “in” that would shock you, because you don’t see them as “included”?
  • How easily do you categorize groups as “us and them”?
  • Share or ponder a time when you were all “inclusive” until some “excluders” came along and you quickly switched to their side.
  • When was the last time you were around a room of people who live life pretty much apart from God, and, how did it feel?
  • Who is it hardest for you to sing, “I like you?”
  • What might be some symbols (like Mr. Clemons and Mr. Rogers feet in the pool) that we could use today to signify inclusion?
  • How possible do think it is for us to have no human as an enemy but rather make enemies of hate, meanness, greed, etc.?
  • How do you like the “we” of the forest?
  • How does your picture of God contribute to dread or hope?
  • When God thinks about you love swells in his heart and a smile comes to his face!! What will it take for you to believe this?
